Bible study is not just an
intellectual exercise or a scholastic inquiry into knowledge of
antiquities. As we search the Scripture we must be asking ourselves:
“What is here for me to learn?” & “How does this apply to me?” & “What
changes do I need to make to bring my life into conformity to the Word
of God?” This is the step where we recognize the lessons the passage has
for us, and bring our will to bear in translating this knowledge we have
acquired into action in our lives. This is the bottom line for all Bible
study—Bible study is to change your life.
There is a great deal of Bible study that takes place that is not
intended to produce life-change—careless and lukewarm church members,
academics who have set themselves up as “critics” of the Bible, etc. At
this point, the judicious use of
commentaries may be helpful. This includes tracts,
periodicals, Study Bible notes, etc. This is where you are consulting
other minds on what they have discovered in their study of this passage.
Ask the following
questions as you strive to make
application to your life:
&
Is
there any sin condemned here for me to avoid?
&
Is
there any command here for me to obey?
&
Is
there any promise here for me to believe?
&
Is
there any wisdom here for me to follow?
&
Is
there any example here for me to either copy or
avoid?
&
Is
there any prayer for me to echo here?
&
Is
there any warning to hearken to here?
